rincon de la vieja national parkCosta Rica National Parks in Guanacaste

Costa Rica is well know as a Eco-Friendy Country right? Well it does have over 23% of its total terrotory under Conservation i am very proud to mention. Near Junquillal Beach in the Guanacaste Area there are three main conservation areas, Guanacaste Conservation Area, Arenal Tempisque Conservation Area and the Tempisque Conservation Area, between the three there are over 40 National Parks and Wild Life Refuges. I highly recommend you to visit at least one of them. Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park, Tenorio Volcano National Park, Santa Rosa National Park, Palo Verde National Park and Barra Onda National Park are among the top destination relatively close to Junquilla Beach (around 1,5 hour drive).

In all the National Parks you will find hicking treks ranging from begginer to pro-adventure level all sorunded by exotic wildlife, in the Guanacaste National Parks you will be able to see tropical dry forest and rainny and cloudy forest, mangrooves and other ecosystems.

Sport Fishing

Why is Sport Fishing so Incredible? Besides that fact that you are engaged in a ancient battle of man against beast, the prize is oh so delicious. In Junquillal Beach you can practice 2 types of Fishing, with one way consisting of fishing close to the shore or renting a Panga or getting a Sport Fish Tour either for half day or full day tours in deep water (You will have to go to Flamingo or Tamarindo to get the tour). Since we are located in a under-devolped area of the country you can take advantage the continental platform that is dramatically shifted by deep water trenches that permit big game specimans at your disposal very near to the shore.

Horseback Riding

This is a authentic experience that is a must for everybody. There are few things in the world I find more relaxing than a stroll down a deserted beach section, away from everybody, on the back of a horse. Maybe the sound of the water flowing thru the rocks of a blue pristine river, or the acustic enchantment of a Violin and Chello. These are some of the things that can be compared to the feeling of trasporting yourself thru the dense Jungle and long secluded beaches in the traditional way.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

The area surrounding Junquillal contains great conditions for one of my personal favorite activities. Even though the water visibility is not as cristal clear as the Carribeean side of Costa Rica (Underwater Visibility is from 20-70 feet), you will not be dissapointed at all. Due to the higher amounts of Plankton concetration in the Pacific, much more larger marine animals are attracted to prime locations which offer a very unique and intense experience. There are 2 special beaches called Playa Blanca and Pargos to the North that are very close to Junquillal and where snorkeling can be practiced.

Junquillal Beach is one of the most important nesting site in Guanacaste's and Costa Rica for the Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). There is a leatherback turtle conservation project between the local community and WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature). The project has been in place since 2005, lead by Dr. Gabriel Francia the project has focused on turning the people who used to poach turtle eggs for local consumption into turtle conservationist.

surf junquillal costa rica

Surf and aquatic sports in Junquillal

Junquillal is great to beach to Surf and practice other aquatic sports. There is a beach break in Junquillal, located on the main beach at the north side, it is a very constant beach break, with right and left waves, will work better with a southwest swell and preferring when the tide is going up. The point is not as crowded as Playa Negra or Avellanas but the days where you can be the only one on the water are over.

beach-walk-JunquillalEnjoy the Beach!

I'm quite sure this is the activity that you will do and love more while you are at Junquillal. The beach is a long beach perfect to enjoy walks, if you are on the main beach to the south you will fin some nice tide pools, there is a special one that is a bit deep where I'm sure you can enjoy with the kids or with your couple. Going further to the south side of the beach is the Nandamojo river estuary,a great place to go fishing or just relax and contemplate the nature, birds, the silence and peace of that place.
